SUGGEST A WORK OR PROGRAMME FOR KALLIO SUMMER STREETS 2025/ VAPAAN TAITEEN TILA POPUP -EVENT UNTIL THE 3RD OF NOVEMBER!
The City of Helsinki is launching Kallio Summer Streets -project in the Kallio area during the summers of 2025 and 2026, aiming to enhance the comfort of street areas. The main focus areas of the project are Porthaninkatu, Fleminginkatu, Vaasankatu, as well as the parks and squares associated with these streets. The project will be carried out in collaboration with local residents, businesses, educational institutions, and other stakeholders.
The Student Union of Uniarts Helsinki (TaiYo) is organizing an open call for students of the University of the Arts, through which proposed works will form the Vapaan Taiteen Tila pop-up program, to be realized during the summer of 2025. Funding for the artists’ fees will be sought from the City of Helsinki by TaiYo. The producer chosen by TaiYo will be responsible for producing the program in collaboration with the selected artists and the City of Helsinki.
A work proposed as part of the program could be, for example, an exhibition, concert, performance, course or workshop, discussion event, public artwork—or something else. You may propose a completed work or one that is still in development. The work can be realized, for example, in a street or park area associated with the project, in empty commercial spaces that the city might rent for the project, at Vapaan Taiteen Tila or its surroundings. You may also submit a proposal to the City of Helsinki for structures or other resources that would facilitate the presentation of the work in the outdoor spaces targeted by the project.
Please include the following in your application:
- A brief introduction of the artist(s) / group members (contact information, academy and study program, stage of studies, other relevant details?)
- Work or program plan (specifying what, where, when, for whom…)
- Work plan for the project (if it is not a completed work)
- Proposal for structures to be installed during the spring of 2025 for the Summer Streets project, which would facilitate the implementation of your work (e.g., stage, exhibition space, hanging structures, mobile structures…)
- Required funding for the work or program (artists’ fees, material costs, equipment rentals…)
- Possible images or sketches of the work
Send your application by Sunday, November 3rd at 11:59 pm to taiyo-paasihteeri@uniarts.fi with the subject “Hakemus Kallion kesäkadut 2025”.
The decision on which proposed works will be included in the program will be made by TaiYo’s board no later than November 12th. Final confirmation of the Vapaan Taiteen Tila pop-up program will be received by the end of 2024, after the City of Helsinki makes a decision on funding for the program.
Further information about the Kallio Summer Streets project
In the Kallio Summer Streets project, the goal of the City of Helsinki is to bring new life to the area known as the Kallio Loop, which includes Porthaninkatu, Fleminginkatu, Vaasankatu, and Hämeentie. In practice, this means, for example, the expansion of terrace areas, the installation of structures that encourage art presentations and communal activities, the restriction of car traffic, and the creation of stopping and leisure opportunities for pedestrians.
The Summer Streets -season starts in May and will last approximately until the end of September. Summer streets have previously been implemented between 2022 and 2024 on Kasarmikatu, Erottajankatu, Pieni Roobertinkatu, and Korkeavuorenkatu in Helsinki.
According to the current plans, the key locations along the Kallio Loop—Porthaninpuistikko, Karhupuisto, Vaasanpuistikko, and the park end of Vaasankatu—will serve as central hubs for the project. These spaces will offer the opportunity to set up temporary structures related to various art and recreational activities.
