Information about the membership fee

Who are the members of the Student Union and pay the membership fee?

The University of Arts Studen Union (also called TaiYo) automatically includes all undergraduate and master's degree students studying for a bachelor's or master's degree at Uniarts Helsinki. These students must pay the TaiYo’s membership fee when registering for attendance for the coming semester or year. Exchange students studying and doctoral students, for example, can also join as members to get the membership benefits.

Where to register as an attending student?

University of Arts Helsinki webpage provides more detailed registration instructions for all attending students, which you can read here:  https://student.uniarts.fi/guides/registration-for-the-academic-year/

You can register as an attending student annually in the Oili service, where you can also pay TaiYo's membership fee directly. Instructions and dates for enrolling for each term are communicated by the University of Arts. If you enroll at another time and you are not able to pay the membership fee through Oili, please read TaiYo's instructions on how to pay the membership fee further down on this page.

What is TaiYo, where does the membership fee goes and who decides on it?

The Student Union membership fee is not related to the University's tuition fee. The membership fee is used to fund TaiYo’s activities. The Student Union is an independent organization, not part of the University, stated by law, and the Student Union's activities, such as the amount of the membership fee, are decided by the Representative Council elected by the students. The Student Union's task is to keep the students' voices heard in the University's decision-making, to build a sense of community across academy boundaries and be part of making the art students and art in our society more valued. For example, TaiYo fights for the student discounts in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area in cooperation with other student unions, is responsible for electing student representatives to the University's administrative bodies and supports students' own communal and artistic activities.

You can find more information about the Student Union's activities on this website, and you can also find us on both Instagram and Facebook (@taiyoartsu).
