The Representative Council of the University of the Arts Student Union has elected Heidi Backström and Jesse Häyhä as student representatives to the University Board, starting from 1 January 2026. The election was made at the RepCo's meeting on Monday, 17 November. The current term of the University Board ends at the turn of the year. The Board consists of eleven members: two student representatives, two professors, two other staff members, and six external members from outside the university community.
Backström is a first-year student in the Praxis Master’s Programme at the Academy of Fine Arts. Heidi has extensive experience working and holding positions of trust in the arts and cultural sector.
Backström kommentoi: ”Tehtävä toisena opiskelijoiden edustajana Taideyliopiston hallituksessa tuntuu suurelta kunnialta ja innostavan vastuulliselta tehtävältä. Seuraavalla hallituskaudella laaditaan yhdessä koko yliopistoyhteisön kanssa Taideyliopiston tuleva strategia, eli pääsemme tekemään kauaskantoisia päätöksiä. Kauaskantoisia yliopiston opiskelijoiden ja sitä kautta koko kentän kannalta. Näen tämän tapana olla luomassa taas piirun verran kestävämpää taidekenttää.”
Häyhä is a first-year church music student at the Sibelius Academy. Jesse has also studied management and administrative sciences at the University of Lapland. Häyhä has solid experience in student advocacy and representation, having served as a student member of the University of Lapland Board, Chair of the Representative Council of the University of Lapland Student Union, and as a member of the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland in 2024.
Häyhä kommentoi: ”Kiitän lämpimästi saamastani luottamuksesta. Tartun tehtävään innostunein ja motivoitunein mielin. Toimintaympäristö korkeakoulupoliittisella kentällä on ollut murroksessa, ja edessämme on sekä taloudellisia että poliittisia haasteita, joihin on syytä varautua. Yliopiston hallituksen on tärkeää olla aktiivinen vaikuttamistyössä sekä ennen muuta tukea yliopiston operatiivista johtoa oikean kurssin löytämisessä. Taideyliopisto on ainutlaatuinen toimija suomalaisessa sivistysmaisemassa ja minulla on vahva usko siihen, että taiteella ja kulttuurilla tulee olemaan entistä merkittävämpi rooli tulevaisuuden hyvinvointiyhteiskunnassamme.”

The Representative Council of University of the Arts Student Union is a 15-member body elected by students and serves as the highest decision-making authority of the Student Union. In addition to electing the Board, deciding on annual activities, policies, and long-term goals, the Representative Council also appoints the most significant student representatives, namely those to the University Collegium and the University Board.
