What will I get to do on the Board? And what is the role of the Chair?

On this page you can find more information on what kind of things you get to do on the Board or as the Chair of TaiYo, as well as what you will get to learn and experience.

Former of the Board (Chairperson)

The first task of the Former of the Board is to interview the other Board applicants and assemble a proposal on who should be elected to the Board. If the Representative Council approves the proposal, the Former of the Board becomes the Chair of the Board and the whole student union.

As the chair you e.g.
✨plan, facilitate planning and lead the work of the Board
✨plan the content of the board meetings and chair the meetings
✨lead the entire student union together with the secretary general
✨represent TaiYo and all art students at different events and discussions
✨meet with the university leadership, decision-makers and colleagues from other student unions

As the Chair, you learn about leadership, advocacy, communication, planning, coordinating, negotiating, administration and processes. Being the chair of the student union is a unique opportunity to try, experience, influence and grow, and promote the good of art students and art in general.

The Chair is expected to give more of their time than the board members. The Chair gets a fee for the work, in 2025 the fee was 600€ per month.

If you are interested in becoming the Chair, send a free-from application to the Secretary General Jane Kärnä (taiyo-paasihteeri@uniarts.fi) by Sunday 23 Nov 11:59 PM or come to the TaiYo RepCo meeting Tuesday 25 Nov at 7 PM. More info from the secretary general.

Board members and the whole Board together

Make Uniarts the best possible for the students 💡

Influencing Uniarts so it would be best it can for the students, is TaiYo's central task.  This includes speaking for the rights of the students and influencing e.g. students wellbeing, structures that support equity, tutoring, orientation, spaces and the university's long term goals.

The Board members of TaiYo have active dialogue with the leadership of the university, meet regularly with different actors within the university, give comments and statements about planned changes at the uni., choose and support student representatives in decision-making bodies, challenge the university so that students' needs and wished are heard.

Influencing an advocating within the university can develop your negotiation, communication, argumentation and collaboration skills, teach you about how a large organisation operates and challenge you to look for new solutions, ways to listen and communicate and represent a diverse student community.

Be the art students' voice in society 📢

The Board of TaiYo is a great place to influence the matters important to art students. In many cases the board members of TaiYo represent all art students in Finland. The advocacy work in society can mean statements, speeches, comments, messaging, meetings, demonstrations or signing petitions and initiatives.

In 2025 TaiYo has discussed topics like the future of grants for art, employment of art students, costs of public transportation, cuts to students’ livelihood, education and art and culture, student housing and the situation of international students.

On the TaiYo Board you can meet actors in the art and culture field, advocators for art and culture, local and national decision-makers and politicians, sometimes ministers too.

Organise parties, influential advocacy events or something else for the student community 🎈

On the TaiYo Board you can release your creativity and organise different events from art student seminars to Vappu picnics!

By organising events the Board can bring people together. The events are organised together and they are a great wat to learn about organizing. Budgeting, communication, planning the snacks, theme, programme, scheduling...you got it!

What else?

On the TaiYo Board you also get to meet student unions of other universities, exchange ideas and get training. You get an overview to society and societal themes related to students. You will certainly learn something new and hear different point-of-views that will expand your thinking!

On the Board you will meet and collaborate with students from different academies, perform, brainstrom, enjoy, develop, learn, communicate, do together, learn about decision-making, decide on policies, promote themes important to you, develop skills for your future and a lot more!
