Letter for a new student

Dear new student,

Congratulations for getting in and welcome to the University of the Arts!

For many of us, receiving the place to study is like a journey of a long-developed harmony, coming to the turning point where a chord finally resolves to the tonic chord. Getting a study place is a landmark, after which you can say a little louder that you’re going to be a professional artist.

Getting into school might raise different kinds of feelings. I want to remind you that everything will be OK. You have deserved all of the joy and the sun! Let this study place bring you certainty in this world, which keeps on surging. During the following years, besides getting to dive into your own study field, you get to know a bunch of new people and look for your identity as an artist.

You are going to step into a community, which is interested in the surrounding world. In Uniarts, there are plenty of routes to get to influence the students' matters and more broadly the society. Each of the three academies have their own academy committee, where you get to organize activities to the students, especially in your academy. The student union (of which you are a member, too), supports the operation of the committees and associations and does influencing and advocacy work – both in the university and outside of it.

Studying in Uniarts can feel like both finding and getting lost. I encourage you to try a little bit of everything and look for your own thing outside the box, too. However, sometimes enthusiasm can get the better of you. During your studies, it is important to invest also in your recovery. It takes time to find your own identity as an artist, but luckily, we have the rest of our life to find the way there.

And usually, getting lost makes a better story.

Have a restful summer and a delightful first autumn as a Uniarts student!
