The University of the Arts Student Union (ArtSU/TaiYo) nominates Eugenie Touma van der Meulen (they/she) to be a candidate for the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) 2024. The Board will be elected at the general assembly on 17-18 November 2023 in Tampere.
Touma van der Meulen has studied harpsichord and continuo performance at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts. As a Board member for ArtSU in 2020 their areas of responsibility were social policy, international affairs, and communications.
”Olen erittäin iloinen ja kiitollinen saamastani luottamuksesta asettua ehdolle näin tärkeään tehtävään opiskelijaliikkeessä. Nyt jos koskaan tarvitaan rohkeita ääniä turvaamaan ja edistämään opiskelijoiden, erityisesti kaikkein syrjäytyneimpien, oikeuksia ja hyvinvointia. Odotan innolla, että pääsen jatkamaan työtäni harvoin kuultujen, mutta olennaisten näkökulmien esiin tuomiseksi rohkeasti ja huumorintajuisesti”, Touma van der Meulen kommentoi.
Touma van der Meulen has wide experience in the student movement. Before becoming a Board member for ArtSU, she served as chair of the Representative Council from 2017-2019, and she has also held various student representative positions at Uniarts, including the University Collegium. Currently, they serve as a Board member for the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY), with equality and international affairs as their sectors. Their mandate in the HYY Board is from the Helsinki University Greens, and she has a mandate from the Green Youth to run for SYL as well. At the University of Helsinki, Touma van der Meulen studies neuroscience. In all her advocacy work, she combines a strong sense of justice with warmth towards all those she encounters in her work.
Touma van der Meulen uskoo, että seuraavat näkökulmat ovat opiskelijaliikkeelle tulevana vuonna erityisen tärkeitä: ”Menestyäkseen opiskelun aikana opiskelijoiden perustarpeet on tyydytettävä: kohtuuhintainen asuminen, saavutettava terveydenhuolto ja riittävä tulotaso. Myös koulutuksen laatu on turvattava riittävällä rahoituksella ja kiinnittämällä huomiota koulutuksen saatavuuteen kaikille. Kansainväliset opiskelijat on saatava tuntemaan, että he ovat tervetulleita ja olennainen osa suomalaista yhteiskuntaa sekä opintojen aikana että niiden jälkeen, eivätkä vain vaivoin siedettyjä vieraita. Taideopiskelijana ja taiteilijana uskon, että taiteen korkeakoulutus sekä elävä ja monipuolinen taidekenttä ovat erottamaton osa sivistystä, ja siksi sen rahoituksen varmistaminen tulisi olla yhteiskunnallinen prioriteetti.”
The National Union of University Students in Finland will elect next year's president and board at its general assembly in Tampere on November 18–19, 2023. TaiYo has two full and two deputy representatives at the general assembly.
