Torstaina ilmestyv\u00e4ss\u00e4 Image-lehdess\u00e4 on artikkeli opettajien vallank\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4 ja seksuaalisesta h\u00e4irinn\u00e4st\u00e4 klassisen musiikin kent\u00e4ll\u00e4, mukaan lukien Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemiassa. Taideyliopisto on omassa kannanotossaan tuominnut kaikenlaisen ep\u00e4asiallisen k\u00e4yt\u00f6ksen ja todennut, ett\u00e4 kaikki yliopistossa esiin tulevat h\u00e4irint\u00e4tapaukset k\u00e4sitell\u00e4\u00e4n selke\u00e4n prosessin mukaisesti. Kiit\u00e4mme Taideyliopistoa selke\u00e4st\u00e4 linjasta ja kannanotosta, mutta samalla vaadimme yliopistolta viel\u00e4 tehokkaampia konkreettisia toimia ja lis\u00e4\u00e4 resursseja ep\u00e4asiallisen k\u00e4yt\u00f6ksen ja h\u00e4irinn\u00e4n ehk\u00e4isemiseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taideyliopiston ylioppilaskunta haluaa, ett\u00e4 Taideyliopisto on kaikille yhdenvertainen ja turvallinen yhteis\u00f6 oppia ja kasvaa. Taideyliopistossa tulee olla nollatoleranssi kaikenlaiselle ep\u00e4asialliselle k\u00e4yt\u00f6kselle, kuten julkisuudessa nyt esiin nousseille seksuaaliselle h\u00e4irinn\u00e4lle ja n\u00f6yryytt\u00e4miselle. Turvallisen oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n takaamiseksi tulee h\u00e4irint\u00e4tapausten tehokkaaseen selvitt\u00e4miseen olla selke\u00e4t v\u00e4yl\u00e4t ja ep\u00e4asiallisen k\u00e4yt\u00f6ksen ennaltaehk\u00e4isyyn riitt\u00e4v\u00e4t resurssit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taidekoulutuksessa ep\u00e4asiallinen kohtelu on erityisen raadollista: oma keho ja identiteetti ovat opiskelijoille my\u00f6s ty\u00f6v\u00e4lineit\u00e4, jolloin h\u00e4irint\u00e4 vaikuttaa monella eri tasolla. Samalla piirit ovat poikkeuksellisen pienet ja ep\u00e4asiallisesti k\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyv\u00e4 henkil\u00f6 voi toimia k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 kokonaisen alan portinvartijana, jolloin asian puheeksi ottamisen kynnys nousee entist\u00e4kin korkeammaksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taiteen ja taidekoulutuksen historia on my\u00f6s pullollaan jalustalle nostettuja yksil\u00f6it\u00e4, joiden taiteelliset ansiot ovatkin kiistattomat, mutta joiden metodit ja k\u00e4yt\u00f6s ovat olleet myrkyllisi\u00e4 ja moraalittomia. Vuosikymmenest\u00e4 toiseen heid\u00e4n k\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4\u00e4n on katsottu l\u00e4pi sormien, mutta 2020-luvulla selke\u00e4n irtisanoutumisen t\u00e4llaisista toimintamalleista tulisi jo olla itsest\u00e4\u00e4n selv\u00e4\u00e4. Yliopiston tuleekin ottaa t\u00e4m\u00e4 huomioon esimerkiksi rekrytoinneissa sek\u00e4 kutsuessaan kursseille vierailevia opettajia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opiskelijoiden kokemukset ep\u00e4asiallisesta kohtelusta Taideyliopistossa ovat nousseet yleisell\u00e4 tasolla esiin jo yliopiston omissa hyvinvointikyselyiss\u00e4. Kyselyiden pohjalta Taideyliopisto on my\u00f6s selke\u00e4sti tunnistanut ongelman ja nostanut siihen puuttumisen keskeiseksi kehitt\u00e4miskohteeksi kaikissa kolmessa akatemiassa. T\u00e4m\u00e4 on hyv\u00e4 alku, mutta kehitt\u00e4mislinjausten vieminen k\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6\u00f6n on viel\u00e4 pahasti kesken: prosessit h\u00e4irint\u00e4tilanteissa ovat opiskelijoiden n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta ep\u00e4selvi\u00e4 ja ep\u00e4asiallisen k\u00e4yt\u00f6ksen ennaltaehk\u00e4isyss\u00e4 on edelleen paljon parannettavaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaadimmekin yliopistoa panostamaan entist\u00e4 vahvemmin konkreettisiin toimenpiteisiin kaikissa kolmessa akatemiassa: henkil\u00f6st\u00f6lle tulee j\u00e4rjest\u00e4\u00e4 koulutusta turvallisemman tilan periaatteiden soveltamisesta opetukseen, ja opiskelijoita puolestaan harjaannuttaa tunnistamaan ep\u00e4asiallinen k\u00e4yt\u00f6s ja puuttumaan siihen. Taideyliopiston tulee my\u00f6s lis\u00e4t\u00e4 ja selkeytt\u00e4\u00e4 nykyisell\u00e4\u00e4n monen eri tahon vastuulle jaettuja ep\u00e4asiallisen k\u00e4yt\u00f6ksen ehk\u00e4isemiseen ja yhdenvertaisuusty\u00f6h\u00f6n liittyvi\u00e4 henkil\u00f6resursseja, jotta kaikki h\u00e4irint\u00e4tapaukset tulevat aidosti k\u00e4sitellyiksi yliopiston mainitseman selke\u00e4n prosessin mukaisesti ja osallisten yksityisyytt\u00e4 kunnioittaen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyselyiss\u00e4 esiin nostettujen ep\u00e4asiallisen k\u00e4yt\u00f6ksen kokemusten vastapainona virallisesti k\u00e4sittelyyn tulleiden tapausten m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 on Taideyliopistossa pysynyt varsin pienen\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4 osoittaa hyvin konkreettisesti, ett\u00e4 puheeksi ottamisen kynnys on h\u00e4irint\u00e4tilanteissa edelleen liian korkea. Onkin ensisijaisen t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4, ett\u00e4 yliopisto pyrkii madaltamaan t\u00e4t\u00e4 kynnyst\u00e4 mm. muodostamalla opiskelijoille helpon ja tehokkaan v\u00e4yl\u00e4n ep\u00e4asialliseen k\u00e4yt\u00f6kseen puuttumiseen ja tapausten eteenp\u00e4in viemiseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opiskelijoita taas kannustamme rohkeammin ottamaan ep\u00e4asiallisen k\u00e4yt\u00f6ksen puheeksi ja viem\u00e4\u00e4n kohtaamansa tilanteet eteenp\u00e4in my\u00f6s virallisia kanavia pitkin. T\u00e4m\u00e4 ei aina ole helppoa, mutta ep\u00e4asialliseen k\u00e4yt\u00f6kseen ja h\u00e4irint\u00e4\u00e4n ei voida puuttua, ellei konkreettisia tapauksia vied\u00e4 eteenp\u00e4in. My\u00f6s yleisemm\u00e4ll\u00e4 tasolla keskustelu asiasta on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4, ja kaikilla tulee olla oikeus huomauttaa asiattomiksi kokemistaan tilanteista ilman, ett\u00e4 heid\u00e4t leimataan vaikeiksi henkil\u00f6iksi. Keskustelukulttuurin muutos nostaa esiin haitallisia toimintatapoja, kytkee pois vanhoja normeja ja mahdollistaa muutoksen niin yksitt\u00e4isten ihmisten k\u00e4yt\u00f6ksess\u00e4 kuin laajemmin yhteiskunnassakin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taideyliopiston ylioppilaskunta tekee paljon t\u00f6it\u00e4, jotta Taideyliopisto olisi kaikille hyv\u00e4 ja turvallinen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 opiskella ja tehd\u00e4 taidetta. Olemme mm. koonneet asiallisen kohtelun huoneentaulun<\/a> ohjenuoraksi kaikille yliopistoyhteis\u00f6n j\u00e4senille, ja TaiYo:n h\u00e4irint\u00e4yhdyshenkil\u00f6t, joiden m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 juuri lis\u00e4simme, tarjoavat kaikille opiskelijoille h\u00e4irint\u00e4tilanteissa keskusteluapua ja vertaistukea asian viemisess\u00e4 eteenp\u00e4in. Toivomme, ett\u00e4 opiskelijat tunnistavat ylioppilaskunnan ja sen toimijat luotettavaksi tahoksi, jolta voi pyyt\u00e4\u00e4 tukea my\u00f6s t\u00e4m\u00e4nkaltaisissa vaikeissa ja henkil\u00f6kohtaisissa kysymyksiss\u00e4. ArtSU demands a stronger commitment from Uniarts Helsinki for preventing inappropriate behaviour<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the Image magazine that will be published this Thursday, there will be an article about teachers misusing their power and sexual harassment in the field of classical music; including Sibelius Academy in the University of the Arts Helsinki. The subject has drawn much warranted attention even before the article has been published. The article continues the discussion about inappropriate behaviour, harassment and sexism in the arts, and it is a good thing that they are brought up to more concrete discussion also in the field of classical music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of the Arts Helsinki has condemned all inappropriate behaviour in their statement and said that all cases of harassment will be treated through a clear process. We thank the University for taking a clear stance and making the statement, but at the same time we demand more concrete and effective actions and more resources for preventing inappropriate behaviour and harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of the Arts Student Union wants Uniarts Helsinki to be a safe and equal community for everyone to learn and grow. The University needs to have zero tolerance for any sort of inappropriate behaviour, like the sexual harassment and humiliation that have now come to light. To make sure that everyone can have a safe learning environment, there needs to be clear avenues to address harassment incidents efficiently and also enough resources to prevent inappropriate behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In arts education, inappropriate treatment can be especially wretched: students’ own bodies and identities are also tools that they use, so harassment affects them on many different levels. At the same time, the circles are exceptionally small in art disciplines and a person who is treating others inappropriately can be a de facto gatekeeper for their whole domain. This makes the threshold for talking about harassment even higher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history of art and arts education is full of individuals that have been raised on pedestals. Their artistic merits can be impeccable, but at the same time their methods and behaviour can be toxic and immoral. For decades, they have had a blind eye turned on their misbehaviour, but in 2020 a clear renunciation of these kinds of behaviour models should be clear as day. The University must take this into account for example when recruiting staff and inviting visiting lecturers for different classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students’ experiences about inappropriate behaviour in the Uniarts Helsinki have come to light on a general level in the University’s own wellbeing surveys. Due to those surveys, the University has clearly identified the problem and taken tackling it as a central development goal in all three academies. This is a good start, but taking those development principles into action is still badly incomplete: processes on what to do in situations of harassment are unclear for many students and there is a lot more that could be done to prevent inappropriate behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We demand that the University puts more resources into concrete actions in all three academies: staff must have training in how to implement principles of a safer space in teaching situations and students need help in how to recognize inappropriate behaviour and how to respond to it. The University must also add staff resources to the prevention of inappropriate behaviour as well as equality work, so that responsibilities that are now split into many offices become clearer. We need all cases of harassment to be handled with the clear process the University has talked about while respecting the privacy of the people involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compared to the experiences of inappropriate treatment raised in the University surveys, the number of officially handled cases is still quite small. This shows in a concrete way that the threshold for bringing up harassment is still too high. It is imperative that the University should lower this barrier, for example by making an easy and efficient channel on how to react to inappropriate behaviour and how to take the cases forward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, we encourage all students to bring up any incidents of inappropriate behaviour and carry them forward into formal channels. This is not easy, but it’s not possible to react to inappropriate behaviour through official channels if there are no concrete cases brought forward. It is also important to discuss these things on a more general level; everyone must have the right to bring up inappropriate situations and treatment without being labeled as a difficult person. This change in the discussion culture bring harmful policies into light, weaken old norms and make change possible both in individuals as well as in our society as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Student Union is working hard to make sure Uniarts Helsinki is a good and safe environment for studies and making art. We have published guidelines for appropriate treatment<\/a> for all members of the University community, and the ArtSU harassment contact persons – whose number has just been increased – are there to offer peer support and help in taking cases forward. We hope that students can recognize the Student Union as a trustworthy source of help, which you can turn to even in these sorts of difficult and personal questions. We’ve made a strong commitment to help Uniarts Helsinki in dealing with the problems that have come to light, but we need the help of everyone in the University community in doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
