Sulkisitteko silmänne. Dear we, human beings, I kindly ask you to close your eyes for some while. If you feel comfortable. What do you see? What do you imagine? Strawberry fields? Unicorns? Puppies? Lazy summer days? What do we imagine? State? Money? Democracy? The opposite of these? A blond toupee on fire running away from an angry polar bear? Melting ice…cream?

Haluan tällä puheella kysyä: Mikä voima on mielikuvituksella?

Meillä on ihmeellinen kyky kuvitella asioita, myös mahdottomia. We have collectively imagined money, states, borders. Our collective imagination has power over us, it is not easy to think and behave in new ways. But we have imagined feminism and we have imagined equality.

Maybe now more than ever we need imagination. Now more than ever we need collective imagination. It is very very probable that we are on the brink of an ecological turmoil. The future historians will tell us, don’t worry. We need to imagine a global human society that functions differently from today, a human society that is not addicted to oil, whose imagination, happiness, wealth and freedom, whose ideologies, are not depended on exploitation of other living organisms. There is an urgent need for utopias and fantasies. Dystopias are way too easy for this generation to imagine.

To end this monologue, I would also like to ask a few questions: Can art in fact free us from the restrictions of collective imagination? Can art make us hear, see and sense things which are hidden in society, but which do exist and feel? Can art make us imagine what someone or something unknown is sensing?

If for some reason or another we haven’t yet opened our eyes, we should do so. Keeping them shut is also a political act. Toimimatta jättäminen, silmien sulkeminen on myös poliittinen teko. Paitsi jos vetää tirsoja.

Hyvät kanssaopiskelijat, kollegat, hyvä Taideyliopiston henkilökunta, arvoisa ministeri.
