At the General Assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland in November 2025, representatives of TaiYo raised issues concerning art students in their speeches. Below is the speech by Anna, Chair of TaiYo\u2019s Board.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dear general assembly,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWords are a bridges prone to collapse\u201d, writes Miki Liukkonen in their novel The Master of Silence.\u00a0<\/span>Hiljaisuuden mestari<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A while ago, I read a report published by the University of Helsinki, that talks about affective polarization. Differences in opinions related to political questions have not actually become stronger, but the feeling of being of opposite sides has.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to researchers it is in fact affective \u2013 meaning emotions-based \u2013 polariziation that is undermining the foundations of democracy because it weakens the sense of cohesion and trust in society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because art has been shown to make you feel, I see the art field having great potential to slow down or even reverse the trend of deepening polarization. Art increases empathy in society. Through art people can experience things they would not be able to examine in their regular lives. Art education plays a big part in this as well: if we don\u2019t learn to express our thoughts about the world in dialogue with others, what will be left of humanity?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Statovci\u2019s latest work\u00a0<\/span>A Cow Gives Birth At Night\u00a0<\/span><\/i>talks about racism without platitudes bringing into light for the white Finn where they have to look so that everyone in this society would have equal opportunity to be.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At best art is a question that turns towards the other. We should state less and ask more. Reach further with our questions, genuinely try to understand. We cannot afford to lose our language, that enables us to communicate with one another.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
