The first ever strategy of the University of the Arts Student Union was approved in the spring. The strategy outlines the long-term goals for ArtSU, but also its values. ArtSU\u2019s values are Art, science and education, Ecological sustainability, Critical thinking and Sense of community and equality. The definition of each value can be found in the strategy but we also wanted to hear from members of the community to know what they think about them. We asked actives of the student union to write or discuss what the values mean to them.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artist, member of the Uniarts community, what are you doing and why? What makes you act and what is your action for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ecodisaster is the biggest crisis of our time. The wellbeing of the environment is the basis for all that is, so there is nothing that this crisis doesn\u2019t relate to. It touches all of our lives, each one of us. Art has had a significant role in many societal changes. Art can both advance change and respond to different needs that different crises and changes bring about. The ecological crisis is no different: artists and art can have special significance and value in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaikka ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6kriisi koskettaa jokaista, se ei kohtele kaikkia samalla tavalla. Suurimpia k\u00e4rsij\u00f6it\u00e4 eiv\u00e4t ole suurimmat ongelmien ja p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6jen aiheuttajat, vaan pikemminkin p\u00e4invastoin (esim. linkki)<\/a>. T\u00f6rm\u00e4sin hiljattain videoon, jossa jamaikalaistaustainen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6oikeusaktivisti Mikaela Loach (Instagramissa @mikaelaloach<\/a>) kyseenalaistaa asenteen, jonka mukaan on \u201dliian my\u00f6h\u00e4ist\u00e4\u201d tehd\u00e4 mit\u00e4\u00e4n ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6katastrofille. Tunnetasolla toivottomuus on ymm\u00e4rrett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4, mutta moraalisesti ei. On eettisesti kest\u00e4m\u00e4t\u00f6nt\u00e4 luovuttaa, kun kaikki teot, joilla hidastamme ilmaston l\u00e4mpenemist\u00e4 ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n tuhoutumista, voivat kirjaimellisesti pelastaa el\u00e4mi\u00e4. Ekologiset kysymykset ovat olemassaolon kysymyksi\u00e4, el\u00e4m\u00e4n ja kuoleman kysymyksi\u00e4 ja solidaarisuuskysymyksi\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taideyliopiston avajaisissa vuonna 2018 kirjailija Risto Isom\u00e4ki totesi (linkki)<\/a>, ett\u00e4 olisi v\u00e4\u00e4rin asettaa taiteelle maailmanparannusvelvoitteita, vaikka taiteella ja taiteilijoilla h\u00e4nen mukaansa voisikin olla keskeinen rooli maailman ongelmien ratkaisemisessa. Isom\u00e4ki puhuu velvoitteista, mutta ent\u00e4 jos puhuisimmekin oikeuksista?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taiteilijoilla on aivan erityisi\u00e4 edellytyksi\u00e4 olla mukana my\u00f6nteisiss\u00e4 muutoksissa (linkki)<\/a>. Taide voi her\u00e4tell\u00e4 ja ravistella ihmisi\u00e4, yhteis\u00f6j\u00e4 ja systeemej\u00e4. Taitelijat voivat luoda tulevaisuuskuvia ja tehd\u00e4 muutoksen mahdollisuuksia n\u00e4kyviksi. Taiteen kautta voidaan hahmotella sek\u00e4 kokemuksellisesti kurottaa kohti ekologisesti ja sosiaalisesti kest\u00e4v\u00e4mpi\u00e4 todellisuuksia. Taiteilijoilla on ilmaisukeinoja ja kyky\u00e4 puhutella, mink\u00e4 lis\u00e4ksi taiteilijat usein ovat tavalla tai toisella kohotetussa positiossa, jossa he saavat \u00e4\u00e4nens\u00e4 kuuluviin. T\u00e4st\u00e4 asemasta k\u00e4sin taiteilijat saavat<\/em> osallistua maailman muuttamiseen ja n\u00e4ytell\u00e4 merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 roolia siin\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I direct this blog to all you members of the Uniarts community and through us to diverse directions, networks and communities that we are a part of. Actions for a sustainable future are needed on every level. The chance to influence, participate, demand change and get your voice heard are privileges that, when used right, can save lives. We can act for the better of one another and the world. It is not too late, it is exactly the right time to ponder what we are doing and why. What is our role in this all encompassing crisis? What is the role of an artist, art pedagogue or member of the Uniarts community? What is your role?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
