The strategy outlines the long-term goals for ArtSU, but also its values. ArtSU’s values are Art, science and education, Ecological sustainability, Critical thinking and Sense of community and equality. The definition of each value can be found in the strategy but we also wanted to hear from members of the community to know what they think about them. That is why we asked actives of the student union to write or discuss what the values mean to them.

‘Critical’ is often thought of as something negative. Critical people are described as negative nancies, party poopers and destroyers of team spirit. So who wants to be called a ‘critical’ or a ‘critical person’? In all honesty, not many people, I believe.

But when ‘critical thinking’ is considered in the context of art, it inspires me: yes! Critical art and a critical artist! A watchdog of society and those in power! Someone who points out injustices and creates new things!

My own premise to making art has always been socially critical. As a theatermaker and a student of dramaturgy and playwriting, I have always been inspired by artists like Minna Canth. What a challenger of the status quo and queen of scandalous opening nights she was!

As a critical playwright, Canth was seen just as negatively in her time as I described in the beginning, and worse. People in Kuopio, where she lived, prayed that her writer’s hand would be paralysed, so that she could no longer write her plays. But after all it is exactly for the pertinent criticism and timeless description of her time that makes us read and perform her writings over and over again.

There has always been a demand for a pertinent critical gaze in the arts. What the comedies of ancient Greece that mocked the people in power, the contemporary political satire and the socially conscious meme culture have in common is the bubbling chance for change, the hope and vision of a world that is constructed and arranged differently. Art makes visible many harmful structures, gives a voice to the oppressed and discriminated and their experiences and points a finger at hypocrisies.

Of course not all art aims at dismantling hierarchies, nor does it need to. In the art field, it is also ok to be critical of being critical and art can also seek to create escapism, purity and beauty – a momentary release from what is.

So why is critical thinking one of our values in the University of Arts Student Union?

In recent years the ability to think critically and reflect has turned inward. The description of ArtSU’s values state that ArtSU examines its own activities and learns new things. It is not only important to shout one’s demands outwards but also examine the consequences of your own actions – and even more important to genuinely change practices that are not working. Like art, ArtSU too needs to be able to see how it could be differently structured and arranged – how it could operate in a way that truly supporst and reacesh all the members of our community.

So, do critically thinking people suck?

Or is it more about that we must learn to accept criticism better?

Minna Canth also had long correspondance and discussions in her parlor with different people and even her enemies. What we should all learn from her then, is that dialogue and criticism walk hand in hand.

That way we can learn and change, teach and change in the most effective way.

Sara Koiranen

–

Sara Koiranen is the vice chair of the Representative Council.
