ArtSU’s Representative Council elections 2019

You too have the possibility to make an impact on students’ common affairs by voting or becoming a candidate, as the University of the Arts Student Union’s (ArtSU) Representative Council elections are coming up again this fall. On this page you can find basic information about the Representative Council, voting and becoming a candidate.

What Council? What elections?

The Council, “edari”, is like the parliament of the Student Union. It holds the highest decision-making power in the Student Union and decides e.g. on ArtSU’s statutes, membership fee, action plan and budget and appoints the Student Union’s executive board and secretary general and the student members of the University’s executive board.

The council has 15 members and 15 vice members who are elected for a two-year period via official elections in the fall of every second year. The nomination of candidates for this year’s elections ends on October 9 at noon. Voting is conducted on the election days October 31, November 5 and November 6 on voting venues situated in each academy.

Where and how can I vote?

The advance voting is on Thursday October 31, and the official voting days are Tuesday and Wednesday November 5-6. All members of ArtSU who are registered as attending students in the University of the Arts can vote. Your voting venue is determined according to the academy where you have your principal study right, and you can vote only at your own academy’s voting venue as listed below. If you wish to change your voting venue you can send a request by e-mail to by October 17 at 4pm at the latest.

Principal students of Sibelius Academy’s Kuopio unit can only participate in the advance voting:

Members of the Student Union who are studying in Sibelius Academy’s Seinäjoki unit or currently staying abroad because of their studies can vote by mail. To cast your vote by mail you must register via e-mail to by Thursday October 17 at 4pm and the votes must arrive to the Student Union by Tuesday November 5 at 6pm at the latest. If you have registered to vote by mail you cannot vote in the ballot box vote.

Who should I vote?

The Central election committee has confirmed the final list of candidates and a total of 23 candidates are running for Council, including students from all three academies and a total of 14 study programs. Should I become a candidate?

The Student Union handles all the common affairs of students and monitors students’ benefits at the university. If you are interested in influencing affairs considering the studies and the everyday life of students then the Council is the place to be. Every member of the Student Union registered as a present or absent student can become a candidate.

Being a member of the Council doesn’t require any specific previous experience or knowledge – it doesn’t matter if you haven’t participated in Student Union activities before! However we hope that you are eager to learn new stuff and prepared to spend a little time attending the meetings and getting familiar with the matters at hand. How can I become a candidate?

Becoming a candidate is easy: all you have to do is fill in one form and return it to the right place by October 9 at noon. In addition you can join a coalition and take part in adding your coalition to an alliance. Coalitions and alliances are voluntary but they can benefit you because of the relative vote counting system. You can print out all the forms (nomination for candidacy, coalition and alliance forms) here below and they are also available in the places listed below.

Return the filled forms to one of the following places during their opening hours by Wednesday October 9 at noon at the latest:
