The final results of the election have been confirmed and can be found here. Congrats to all new members of the Council!

You too have the possibility to make an impact on students’ common affairs by voting or becoming a candidate, as the University of the Arts Student Union’s (ArtSU) Representative Council elections are coming up again this fall. On this page you can find basic information about the Representative Council, voting and becoming a candidate.

What Council? What elections?

The Council, “edari”, is like the parliament of the Student Union. It holds the highest decision-making power in the Student Union and decides e.g. on ArtSU’s statutes, membership fee, action plan and budget and appoints the Student Union’s executive board and secretary general and the student members of the University’s executive board.

The council has 15 members and 15 vice members who are elected for a two-year period via official elections in the fall of every second year. The nomination of candidates for this year’s elections ends on October 9 at noon. Voting is conducted on the election days October 31, November 5 and November 6 on voting venues situated in each academy.

Who should I vote?

The Central election committee has confirmed the final list of candidates and a total of 23 candidates are running for Council, including students from all three academies and a total of 14 study programs. The full list of candidates and their voting numbers can be found on ArtSU’s election website at www.taiyo.fi/edustajistovaalit/ehdokkaat.

To help you find a suitable candidate, you are welcome to use ArtSU’s voting aid application. In the application, you can read candidates’ presentations and compare their views on the student union, the University of the Arts and the Finnish education system (also in English). The application can be found at https://apps.myzef.com/resources/syl/c3jb5l/index.html.

Should I become a candidate?

The Student Union handles all the common affairs of students and monitors students’ benefits at the university. If you are interested in influencing affairs considering the studies and the everyday life of students then the Council is the place to be. Every member of the Student Union registered as a present or absent student can become a candidate.

Being a member of the Council doesn’t require any specific previous experience or knowledge – it doesn’t matter if you haven’t participated in Student Union activities before! However we hope that you are eager to learn new stuff and prepared to spend a little time attending the meetings and getting familiar with the matters at hand. You can read more about why it is a good idea to become a candidate here.
